SQL is hardly "new".

Agreed. I was referring to Al's comment about the "new world" being SQL
vs the "old DB logic" being RLA. In the sense that RLA is the way we've
done things on i forever (thus "old") and SQL is the newer way (some of
us) do things on i (thus "new"). Old and new are not meant to convey
better or worse. I don't think you can argue that (on i) SQL is "new"
compared to RLA.

SQL is essentially a powerful expert
system for database access

Yes, with a level of knowledge I'll never have or want. The number of
rows in the table, the distribution of the values, the "busyness" of the
machine, the availability of memory, these are but a few of the details
that go into a query optimization. I don't want to think about this
stuff, I just want the orders for customer 22212 as fast as I can get
them.
