I found the problem with your help. It seems I failed to set the parm correctly that allows the password to never expire (*NOMAX).
When I said the password expired, that's the message I received when I expressly logged on to this user profile manually (normal user logon; this userid is used most times to be the user profile used for scheduled batch jobs). Since I failed to set the above parm correctly, the user profile password did expire and when my automated code tried three times and failed the user profile went into disabled mode. DUHHH, on my part.
