Hello Lukas,
Thanks for the response.
I'll pass your thoughts to my hardware config guys. Vern being one of
them :-)
I like the 515 idea with two LPARS. Really we don't need 4 partitions,
but would be nice if affordable.
The best part is we get the developer lease no matter what we do !!

Depending on how exactly you tend to use it, a machine with user based
pricing might provide the best bang-for-the-buck. Such a machine would
limit you to V5R4 and up, though.
-Capability to run multiple LPARS (2-4)
That gets expensive fast - V6R1 allows nested LPARs that share the
same disks, or you can VIO to share disks (but that also requires
V6R1). You can also nest Linux LPARs under V6R1.
Otherwise, you need one disk controller per LPAR. A 515 allows for two
LPARs in the same CEC, without anything external. The new M15/M25 do
not (all 6 disks on the same controller). So if you want 4 LPARs,
you'll need an expansion box (either a full one, or just for disks).
-Capability to run multiple OS versions and OS's (Linux, V5R4, V6R1,
maybe V5R3 ??)
V5R3 support expires in April 09. I think you can still order
old-style POWER5 520 machines, but especially the lower end of those
will give you a miserable price/performance ratio.
- What would you recommend for a machine today ?
Two LPARs in the same CEC without anything external and user based
pricing: The 515. But it all depends on the volume you need.
Otherwise, you can get an M25 with an expansion box - but that
increases the cost by a significant amount.
- How far back on OS levels can we go on LPAR partitions ?
It depends on the machine - the POWER5 520 can run V5R3 and up, and
M15/515 can run V5R4M5/V5R4M0 and up.
- How much minimum disk is needed for each partition typically ?
(50gb,
100gb, less ?)
Depends on what you want to do. I'd recommend 4 arms minimum in a
RAID5 configuration. Two arms in Mirrored (two 147GB disks) also works
nice. Don't get 70GB disks, as they're being phased out.
- How much minimum memory is needed for each partition typically ?
4GB per LPAR would be my recommendation. 1GB is painful, 2GB is
acceptable for one or two users.
