Hello,
i have setup a forum for this to gather some ideas.
And if it has not been clear from the start if this project will take off it will be an open source project.

Betreff: Software Project Proposal
Hello,
as I am in the process of writing some service programs which will be
publicly available under an open source license I was wondering what was
the best way for packaging and distribution.
As I am a linux user I like the tools like apt-get which lets the user
install und update software in a very easy and uncomplicated way.
My proposal would be to develop some software which does the following:
- handle multiple software repositories
- handle at least two levels of repositories (stable and unstable)
- download software
- install software (directly from the internet or from a package on the
ifs)
- install and compile software from source packages
- query repositories for software
- update software
- <any further ideas?>
As there are not many free software projects i don't know if there is a
need for anybody to have this. What is your opinion?
I think the pros for such a project are clear.
The cons for starting such a project would be:
- not many software projects out there to be packaged in any way
- very different coding style of the various project groups/people
- server have probably not an internet connection (so the direct install
from the internet is not as bad needed as otherwise, but install from
package from the ifs would work)
Any other ideas or interested in the project as a developer?
Thanx in advance.
