You have some indicators associated with update mode vs. other mode.

When the screen is sent to the user, some fields are "dual defined" with different rules for different indicator combinations. When not in update mode, the field is displayed as output to the screen, without capability of user keying into it.

That's better than ignoring certain fields when the screen is returned with its fields and command key combination, because people might think a program is broken if it ignores their instructions.

Check box field on a green screen:

Is it possible to protect a check box field in DDS? I have a yes/no
field I would like to display as a check box and not as Y/N. When the
field is in update mode it works just fine, but I have some situations
where I want the field to be viewable but not changeable.
