Subject: RE: Required products for a new i user?
the compilers are bundled together but in v6.1 of the OS there's 2
separate bundles "Heritage" and ILE compilers. the Heritage compiler
contains the OPM compilers (RPG, COBOL,C,C++,CLP) the ILE
compilers are
the ILE versions of the same. RPG on the i is nothing like on a
mainframe....IIRC RPG II is the only flavor on the mainframe
(never worked
with mainframe but have looked it up once upon a time so it may have
changed). but the pricing on the compilers isn't that bad
anyway. someone
mentioned X-Analysis...i prefer Hawkeye personally, even
though Z-Analysis
provides all of the GUI goodness it's far overpriced and you
have to pay
extra for add-ons that are part of the base package of
Hawkeye. (Hawkeye
does have a GUI tool but it's still in it's infancy IMO)...
if you do go to RPG i'd recommend moving straight into
free-format RPG and
using ILE concepts. it will be to your advantage, if you
have to face the
learning curve why learn the "old" methodology and syntax??
just my 2 coppers
Thanks,
Tommy Holden
