here's a *very* simple free format RPG program that simply reads a file 
and updates the records.

ftaxstuff  uf   e             disk    rename(taxstuff:inrec) 
 /free 
    dou %eof; 
      read taxstuff; 
      if %eof; 
        *inlr=*on; 
        return; 
      endif; 
      evalr customer = %Trim(customer); 
      customer = %xlate(' ':'0':customer); 
      update inrec; 
    enddo;

Why translate Easytrieve to COBOL? I dunno! That's just what I've been,
unofficially, hearing was the proposal.
