Yes, you could use the I/O slot that way, but why not just open the
magazine like you discovered.

Look into "reserving" slots too, via the web interface. The drive does not
automatically sequence to the reserved slots. We keep special purpose and
"spares" in the right side magazine. When we closed for snow yesterday and
no-one was here to receive the tapes from off-site storage, I just VPN'ed
in and pulled a tape from one of the reserved slots to the drive.

Yeah, that was it. So, if I was to use the I/O slot I would go
I/O to slot 1
I/O to slot 2
I/O to slot 3
I/O to slot 4
Slot 1 to drive

So glad I figured out the magazine thing.
