Regarding your aside...

I used to think a GUI on a server was a bad idea. I am now of the opinion
that a web UI is the way to go. You can run it from any OS even hand held
devices.

Also, with a thick client if you want to change 1 field on the UI, you now
have to roll that change out to each client, not just the server.

Just some thoughts.
