It is not the cost so much as the double hit you have from both paying maintenance and the license transfer fee. The cost for the last two years of maintenance and the transfer fee is higher than our original purchase price. We have also stopped or moved most development to Windows using the iSeries as a database server so the need is not as great and the users like the flexibility. Most reports are now done in MS Reporting Services so they can be scheduled, pdfed, Excel'd or printed without code and without cost. 

I believe their tools are stuck at v5r1 anyway so keeping them on the old box makes no difference.
