can't remember how you do that..

Not so easy. A real terminal won't allow you to enter hex codes in the display attribute range, and I never bothered to provide hex input in our TN5250E client (which is the only terminal emulator we keep around, much less use, around here).

But knowing that PDM would display them, and that a CHGPFM could apply them, I came up with a workaround.

In CL (boiled down to the barest essentials, as this isn't something I expect to need to do very often):

PGM DCL VAR(&ATTR) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(1) DCL VAR(&TEXT) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(50) CHGVAR VAR(&ATTR) VALUE(X'33') RTVMBRD FILE(FOO/BAR) MBR(FROBOZZ) + TEXT(&TEXT) CHGVAR VAR(&TEXT) VALUE(&ATTR *CAT &TEXT) CHGPFM FILE(FOO/BAR) MBR(FROBOZZ) + TEXT(&TEXT)

This will give the member FROBOZZ in the source PF FOO/BAR a yellow RI text.
