We've had good success with the native ZIP shell written by Uzaemon. It
relies on the zlib components.

I have a command that runs a zip command inside the QSH but all that is
hidden. If you interested I could bundle it up and send it to you. The
biggest hassle is that it runs under the PASE so you need to get the zip
from the web and install on AS/400.

I know there is a jar utility which is a glorified ZIP file

Is the best way to use it is via the QSH command? I want to avoid
using
Java if possible.

You could use the actual zip utility. Here is a link to tell you how
to
get it and how to make it work.

I have not tried it personally. I normally deal in tar files, not
zip.
