Nothing is done in PASE or QShell.
Well, it _will_ use PASE if you choose to use the J9 (32bit or 64bit) JVM :) And Qshell is a common way of invoking java (although absolutely not required).
You can always use the classic JVM if you want (up to 6.1 that is).
