Scott: By that logic, one should not use RPG since it is not governed by
a standard.

Alternatively, look at the OOXML debacle.

I recommend reading Rob Weir's blog, in which lately he discusses issues
regarding standards compliance and interoperability. (See, for example,
http://www.robweir.com/blog/2009/05/battle-for-odf-interoperability.html)

Regarding GNU, it IS a de-facto standard. POSIX is nice and all. But
GNU/Linux is sufficiently dominant that other Unix vendors have to be
concerned about Linux interoperability. That's a fact of life in the
Unix world.
