not sure if mentioned in all the previous posts, but if you log on with telnet, from the green screen login (not the gray windows login) your user and pwd is sent across the net in clear text, and any compromised router it touches, could be capturing it.
The fact that your getting the disconnect msgs seems to indicate they don't have a pwd, but they certainly could be trying, automated or not.
Besides telnet, is your ftp open as well?
There are reasonable vpn solutions for small offices.
