I like this approach and excel is smart enough to recognise the xml
spreadsheet data even if you use the .xls extension (it does issue a warning
message though, that the file format does not match the extension)

If you are going to do this method make sure your users can open xml
spreadsheet i think its probably supported by office 10ish onwards.

You can also use CGIDEV2.  I use this often and have no problems with 
formulas.  The formulas are just defined in the XML template.  And it is 
also FREE.
