Good size? Check out variable length character fields. Then the only
catch is how big to make your 5250 fields (if you're still using that).
If, for some non business and non technical reason (like fear of change or
refusal to learn anything new) that variable length fields are off the
table, then pick up a copy of some EDI standards manual (like ANSI X.12)
and follow the lengths for those elements.
