We have a similar environment - V5R4 on an 8203-E4A with dual Japanese / English workstations - but haven't done any client upgrades on them so I can't help you. I have had issues in the past with the Japanese clients in previous upgrades but not this time.
I have upgraded MY client to V6R1M0 without a hitch however. And I can tell you that our OS upgrade from V5R3, and hardware upgrade from a 9406-520 were the smoothest I've participated in over the last 10 years.
What's your primary language? Our is 2984 ENGLISH DBCS which is often overlooked by business partners until I point it out. Our secondary languages are 2962 Japanese Kanji DBCS and 2924 ENGLISH. The necessity for these is beyond me and I've wondered whether we still need them but that's been our OS for 10 years at least. With these languages installed, it's possible to change the code page within the client properties tab. Also, I'd like to point out that IBM provides a DBCS version of the client.
Is there a compelling reason why you're upgrading the clients?

Subject: Another weird v5r4 Client Access problem for Japanese WindowsMachines
Hopefully someone can help :) After getting current on all fixes on our
system replacement. New V5R4 8203-E4A.
We are running into problems upgrading our Japanese users Client Access.
Terminal options as to fonts are limited and the cursor appears to be in a
strange location. Browsing the IBM website finds a Japanese fix pack for
5.8 of PC COMM under "Rational" but we are not entitled to the fix pack...
How is PC Comm under Rational, why are we not entitled, has anyone seen the
strange things Client Access emulation is doing with English support on a
dual English/ Japanese windows machine. We do get an error on install
saying the client and 400 code page do not match but it just has an OK to
click.... Googled it and found report of the problem, no solution so far.
Thanks!
Konrad
