Work Order processing is often one of those cases where package software fails to meet requirements. If this comes down to needing a bid for custom software, I'd be interested in responding.
My response would be to keep the database and applications under the IBM i native virtual machine, and using a high-performance browser interface, rather than offloading data or workloads to a different platform.
Nathan.

Subject: Looking for GUI software for a metal processing shop
Hi everyone,
I have a customer that needs a program that tracks specifications, testing
results, job steps, and procedures for parts that are in a job (work
order). It must be a graphical program as they need to attach photographs
as part of the specifications. They have found a software vendor who
sells software that meets their needs, but it also replaces everything
their AS/400 currently does and they don't want to move off of the AS/400.
So they are looking for a software package that can fulfill this
"traveler" need and integrates with the System i so that they can continue
to use it for everything else.
Are you aware of any software that meets the above requirements? It
doesn't necessarily have to run on the System i, but it must integrate
with it.

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
