Yes, I always welcomed a hardware upgrade as a good excuse to delete all
spool files.
Now we purge all after x days - no exceptions.

Back before you could save them (without the SPENDMONEY command) I tried
to tell people that they should not rely upon them as they were not backed
up. They, instead, should rely on the data to generate them. If it was
some critical transitional data (like month end) we should figure out an
alternative way of saving the data than relying on the spool file.
