No, as on the IBM i, you will need to tell the system what to do with
the newly installed drive.

Example IBM i

You have an IBM Power 520 with a 4 drive RAID set in the CEC.
You plug an an additional drive into the CEC.
You open up SST, and tell the IBM i to add the disk to the RAID set.
You then tell the IBM i to add the disk to ASP 1.

All of this can be done while the machine is online.

Example Windows

You have an IBM x3650 M2 with a 4 drive RAID set in the machine.
You plug an additional drive into the machine.
You open the LSI Storage Manager, and tell it to add the disk to the
existing RAID set.
You then tell Windows to add the newly-expanded space to an existing partition.

All of this can be done while the machine is online.

The Windows approach is certainly less integrated - the configuration
of the RAID depends on the storage controller you use, and is
different from machine to machine (albeit it's the same across a
generation of IBM machines). However, local storage controllers are
only used in very small database servers. Bigger projects use a SAN,
which will bring you the same advantages that you have when you use a
large IBM i machines with lots of disk drives.
