I have a 520 that is HMC managed but no HMC attached. It has one
partition that automatically starts when the system is powered up. We
are using Ops Console for the system console. And yes I need to get our
HMC here in RP to attach to my server in Chicago. ( I purchase the 520
used and told them I did not have or want an HMC but they did not
convert it correctly and I did not know what a headache it could be
later in life, until now. ) But the good news is from SST you can get to
the partition and start or end them, even move memory into the
partition, which I found just now after upgrading the memory and NOT
seeing it. So can it be done, YES. Should it be done, NOT in my
opinion.

Subject: Model 520 WITHOUT an HMC?

Anybody know if a 520, partitioned into 2 partitions, can be operated
WITHOUT an HMC? Assuming the whole box doesn't have to be reset (like a
complete power down, or power outage), it could be run, right? You
wouldn't
be able to individually restart a partition, or do any config changes,
but
it could be done, I think.

I know, why would you want to? Well, if it breaks (as in hardware
failure),
it would be nice to know you could still use the iSeries while waiting
for a
replacement.
