I am curious why one doesn't back up directly to the HA server, and let the HA Site manage the back up tapes and storage? Then there is no driving, no latency, no in-house function beyond auditing and testing.

It's still good to back up to tapes however.

If you screw up the data on one machine it's quickly replicated to the other. Journalling helps, a lot, in recovering this data, but there's some time when a restore is needed.
