Hi Glenn

Not sure I follow. The data is already in character format and I need
to convert it into a numeric value that can then be summed up. If I use
any of the existing BIFs, e.g. DEC, ZONED, etc, it gives me an error
that the field contains invalid data - which I guess is the "negative"
digit (J, K, L, etc).
