I would have to agree. We did our config back in June for the new system. BP didn't mention the need for V5R4M5 until after we placed the order in October. Not the right time of the year for us to have taken the current system down to install V5R4M5. Being a college June/July/Aug would have been perfect for a little down time.
Would have liked to have gone to 6.1 just after it came out but we have a vendor who is not supporting the version of their software we are running on 6.1 and we are not in a position to replace that package just yet or to move to their newer version. Hopefully with this new system we can partition that application off running on 5.4 and take the main partition to 6.1. After we get the new system in we are going to look at the process to run partitions. Replacement system was configured with running two partitions in mind.

The other system was current as of August?
Then I want to go to a general point. Folks, if you are running 540 then
get yourself to 545 and reapply cumes, groups, etc. If this person would
have taken the time in August to slip install 545 LIC he would be much
better off.
Doing this will put yourself in a better position to upgrade to new
hardware.
I've ran 545 on a 270.
To see how to install 545 on a 540 system see "Replacing Licensed Internal
Code and i5/OS of the same version and release" at
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r4/topic/rzahc/upgradesameversion.htm
Actually I recommend you get to 6.1 or higher but some of you are putting
off ANZOBJCVN and working things out with your vendors for as many years
as you can.
