Chris, the link() API will create a hard-link to a file in a file system. A hard-link can be thought of as an "alternative filename" for the file. It doesn't actually copy the physical data on disk, it's just another filename for the same block of bytes on disk.

The link() API will only work if the file and it's new link are located in the same file system. (Which won't work in your scenario. Your data is not only on a separate file system, it's on a completely separate computer!)
