How are the tape drives attached?
Fiber attached via a SAN switch?
Fiber directly?
Copper directly?

We use the SAN switch.

Backups need to be timed so they do not conflict. While you may find the
idea of using one of the other tape drives if one of the others are down
you may find that the backup window you have does not allow for that.
Otherwise, why aren't more lpar's sharing the drives? Better to keep them
on maintenance and call IBM asap when one fails. Worst case is that you
can't run the backup one night.
