We use HP thin clients. They bought Neoware and are putting out their own
line. Running Embedded XP. Good management capabilities which I think will
get better. Hardware seems solid.

If 'terminal server' is in mind then vmware VDI is the king. They are

Occasionally we look at such things. Right now we're thinking of away
from Citrix and on to some new player on the block (whose name
temporarily
escapes me). Not only do you have low maintenance but you have the
portability. The other advantage is that if you have some serious
client/server stuff (like Lotus Notes) think of how much faster,
especially in remote sites, it would be to only transfer the screen full

of data and not the whole attachment to the remote client. Sort of like
a
highly graphical version of a dumb terminal. I know of people looking
at
this situation just because of remote site speed of data access, right
Phil R.?

My boss may look at Linux again. Right now with Lotus 8 and the
imbedded
symphony products he's thinking that for 95% of the users that would be
all the desktop they need. Comes with:
- Notes
- imbedded browser
- Symphony with word processing, spreadsheet, powerpoint like product,
etc
He'd still like the remote desktop situation better. Speaking as
someone
assigned to roll out Notes versions to hundreds of users it sounds
attractive to me also.

Subject: Thin client or linux PC?
Sent by: midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi everyone,

I have a customer who is interested in replacing their multiple Windows
PCs with a low maintenance solution. They want to trial using linux,
either with a thin client (such as an X terminal) connecting to an
existing linux server or with individual machines running linux. They
are

partial to thin clients for the low maintenance benefits, but other
people

I have talked to think that individual machines all running linux would
be

better. Could anyone with experience please give recommendations?

James Rich

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
