I suspect there's a lot missing from the above question.  Here's one way to
handle one interpretation:

D datemdy                         D   DATFMT(*MDY)   
D datecymd                       7                   
                                                     
 /Free                                               
  datecymd = %Char(datemdy: *CYMD0) ;
