Thanks for the idea. I copied that code and tried it. When I run it
interactively, It prints out 6 system level *SYS level variables plus my
one *JOB level variable that I created. I am aware that these are all
really at the *JOB level since it makes a copy of the *SYS level variables
to the *JOB level. I then submitted the same program to batch using the
following command "SBMJOB CMD(CALL PGM(TEST5R)) JOB(RTVB1)
CPYENVVAR(*YES)". The printout from that job only shows the *SYS level
variables, not the variable I added in my interactive job. It sure is
strange.

Instead of trying to retrieve the JDETESTVAR envvar, run the report and
see
what is set in the batch job. Perhaps that will help point to the issue.
At
least it will show you if the JDETESTVAR is missing or not...
