Thanks, the bytes provided is set in the template DS definition for qusec (a
modified version of the IBM version). I changed my code to explicitly set it
to %size(qusec), but still no joy.

I agree. I don't see in the code where you set it before the API 
call, but maybe you trimmed that line out. Perhaps coincidentally, 
1077952576 is x'40404040'.
