If you have the keyboard without the numeric pad to the right (we have an
IBM keyboard like this), "num lock" is the shift on the "scroll lock" key.
Since they're on the same key, users screw it up.  :)  They think they're
doing num lock instead of scroll lock.

Depending on how the last person left it, if you try to sign on with a
number in your password, it just gets flaky.  I have simply learned when I
sign on at that server to first make sure caps lock, num lock, scroll lock,
dimwit lock, and do-you-feel-lucky lock are all turned off.

Just you typical run-of-the-mill PITA.
