If you have downsized and cost is an issue you may want to consider
outsourcing your document imaging. You didn't say anything about your
search and retrieval needs. Chase offers a service called iVault. They
identify key fields of documents that need to be indexed for sorting and
searching. Their processing facility cleans (tears off tractor-feed paper
holes, unfolds corners, removes staples, etc.), scans, and manually key
index values for the documents. I believe that they might offer an option
to let you scan them yourself. Storage is on their system and retrieval
is via a secure Internet connection.

The cost of imaging is more than just hardware and software. There is a
lot of time and labor involved which is a recurring cost that varies with
volume. We've been using them for over two years and it's worked well.
