Google is getting a lot of attention right now by offering their "App
Engine" service which is based on several of the architectural principles
inherent in IBM i. Google is essentially saying that when you deploy your
applications under our service, you don't need to concern yourselves about
hardware, or operating system, or database, or scalability - we take care of
that for you. You just need to be aware of the high-level application,
database, and runtime interfaces you need to plug into.
I could see IBM or somebody offering a similar cloud service based on Power
7 and IBM i, and perhaps even doing it more efficiently than Google, just
because the platform is already integrated, and scales automatically. My
only question is how easy would it be to manage partitions for many
different organizations on a single computer - I'm just not familiar with
that, and the documentation is neither easy, nor intuitive?
