FWiW: For a portion of the expression in a recent post, which I have included at the end of this message as quoted text, I suggest that there is a /more appropriate/ expression. Consider for example, the revision shown here:

Case when substr(hex(substr(CFRE1A, 1, 3)), 6, 1) IN ('D', 'B')
then -1 /* 0xD & 0xB as nibbles represent BCD negative */
else 1 /* 0xA, 0xC, 0xE, 0xF nibbles are BCD positive */
/* expression ignores bad decimal data for an invalid sign */
end

Case when substr(hex(substr(CFRE1A, 1, 3)), 6, 1) = 'F'
then 1
else -1
end
