I opted for the second choice (bring in the new box at the latest OS) when we moved from a 720 (running 5.1) to a 520 (running 5.3, which was the latest at the time). I don't see any advantage to doing a system upgrade. Granted we're pretty vanilla, but I ordered the new box with all of the product libraries that we wanted. I hooked the new box into the network and tested everything then.

Baseball. The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers could be playing for the championship, and I'd rather be watching the Angels and Yankees. -John Wooden

Subject: Indecision ... Do I BU/Restore/Upgrade OR BU/migrate/refresh...

I will be REPLACING my current iSeries 550 system with a new IBMi 520 system (different serial number) ...

I will be transferring all the license program products from the current system to the old system.

The current system is utilizing about 80% of 2TB's...

I have a couple of months to do this before going live in September so I don't have to do this whole project over one long hectic weekend.

The current system is at V5R4. When I'm all done, I want the new system to be at V6R1 (Not 7.1 ... We'll do that next year)

If you were presented with this project how would you do it?

Would you:

1.) BU the current system, return it to production operation
2.) Then restore the BU on the new system and upgrade to V6.1
3.) Test test test test... the new system
4.) Then prior to going live, refresh User Data using the most current BU from the current system...

Or would you:

1.) Install the new system at V6.1
2.) BU the current system, return it to production operation
3.) Using the migration method outlined in the BU Recovery manual, restore user data to the new system
4.) Test test test test .... the new system
5.) Then prior to going live refresh User Data using the most current BU from the current system...

What might be the Pros and Cons to using either method? Is there a better way to do this?

One question that comes to mind.... Could I even refresh/merge things like the user data for BRMS or the Advanced Job Scheduler, on the new system after it was upgraded to V6R1 ????

Ahhhhhh... Decisions decisions decisions ....

Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated !
