I actually did this a few years ago on our then-backlevel test system,
maxed it out with 128MB modules.

The system worked and booted, IIRC showing the full amount of memory,
but it was extremely slow. A lot slower than just the 512MB it
initially.

The reason for this is that the system doesn't have enough of some
type of cache it would need to be able to cache all the translation
tables the system needs (maybe someone with more expertise here can
elaborate).
