SAVF has more compression options than just *YES and *NO since maybe 
V5R3 -*HIGH, *MEDIUM, and *LOW. *HIGH often is very slow with little 
gain in compression over *MEDIUM. *LOW is not much better than *YES, as 
I recall - did a comparison maybe 7 years ago or so. I seem to recall 
that I published results in this mailing list.

The jar utility can also compress objects - it is essentially a ZIP file 
with an optional manifest and compression options. Might be worth a 
look, usable from qshell for sure. Haven't used it in forever, though.
