Raul, Charles, and Pete,
Thank you for your responses.
Yes, I think it was in my terminology and semantics that was the confusing
part.
What you guys are stating is very close to what I was trying to say, and
hopefully planning to do.
We did buy the 810 used and not the new Power box because of the dollars
involved.
The 270 will just be used as an in between box. It has no software nor
hardware support.
I can't do an upgrade on our 620 because we do not have software support,
and also can't afford the downtime.
Charles, thanx for the links. I think they will be very helpful.
I do have all of the CDs for V5R2 and V5R4M5. Also, all of the current
PTFs for both Versions.
Thanx again,
Nick

Nick,
I don't think is the right direction. In fact, I know I
certainly
wouldn't do it this way. You don't downgrade a machine, and then restore
stuff to it, and expect everything to be "in-sync". Out of curiosity, did
you just buy an 810? Why didn't you go to a new Power6 box?
Your 270 can run everything from V4R5 to V5R4M5. I think
you would
be better off doing the following:
1) Do a Save 21 of the 620
2) Backup (Save 21) what you have on the 270 if you ever
need it again.
3) Do a full restore of that backup in Step 1 to the 270
initializing
the system (option 2 Restore and initialize the system when you do your D
mode IPL using the tape from step 1 on the 270).
4) Now that you have a complete copy of your 620 on your
270, Prepare
(all sets required like increase the LIC, insure disks are 17GB or more,
required PTFs, etc) and upgrade that from V4R5 to V5R2. Apply PTFs.
5) Upgrade the 270 again from V5R2 to V5R4M5 again, taking
into account
all the required pre and post upgrade steps.
6) Now, you have a good V5R4M5, onto which you can back up
the 270 and
then restore the system onto the new 810.
There is another way, but you really need to know what
you are
doing, and that is to Just load the Lic & OS on the new 810 from V5R4M5
install media, Do a RTVSYSINF and then a full save 21 of the 620 and a
then
do a full restore of the V4R5 620 (User Profiles, CFG, *NONSYS, DLO, IFS,
and then aut) down to the 810 run the UPDSYSINF, and then immediately
update
all the LPPs to V5R4.
I do these all the time, so this is easy. If you are
interested in
getting any help with this, send me an email off-line.

Subject: Upgrading/Migrating from V4R5 to V5R4M5
Happy Monday!
We are finally moving from our 620 to an 810. Getting a little closer to
the 21st Century:-)
IBM is coming today to setup the 810.
Coming from V4R5 and going to end up at V5R4M5 on the 810. We are not
going to go past V5R4M5 because of the modifications we have made to our
ERP software, MAPICS, and I am a 1 person shop.
We have another box, a 270, to use an intermediary step.
I know we can't go up more than 2 levels, so we are going to use the 270
as a go between.
The 270 is at V5R4M5 already, but I would like to bring it down to V5R2 so
I can restore my 620 onto it in one step.
The overall/tentative/high level plan I have is this:
1) Do a GO SAVE 21 on the 270, to save the V5R4M5 version
2) Bring the 270 down to V5R2
3) Restore everything I have on the 620 to the 270, to get all of my
Security, Subsystems, OUTQs, etc. there. I have a GO SAVE 21 for this.
4) Do a GO SAVE 21 on the 270
5) Restore from the 270 to the 810, just the 'System' stuff,
Security, OUTQs, Subsystems, etc..
6) Restore V5R4M5 on the 270
7) Save all of my application software on the 620
8) Restore application software on the 810
Does this sound like it would work?
Would restoring my GO SAVE 21 on the 620 onto the 270 bring the 270 down
to V5R2? If not, I have CDs for V5R2. How do I apply them?
It has been 200,000,000 million years since I have done anything like
this, so I am a little rusty on the System Admin/PTF/OS stuff.
Any advice/help/tidbits would be appreciated.
Thanx,
Nick
