Two thoughs...

1) Do you really need to back up this directory? If the objects are
temporary, I would guess teh answer is no.
2) Have you looked at the SAVACT, SAVACTOPT parms of the SAV command?

How can I lock or allocate a directory (not a a file or object in the
directory) on the IFS?

We've been getting occasional contention issues between the backup and a
third-party PDF tool which is converting a splf and writing to the ifs.   I
can code around it monitoring for the message the tool throws off, but I
can't test it unless I lock the directory.    Our first fix, schedule
changes, is almost as bad as the original problem as reports are being
generated hours later than needed.

I prefer a command line method if possible.

btw - we're on 5.4
