I just ran a test on one of my display files with a field defined as:

RETAIL 5Y 2B 13 41EDTWRD(' . ')

I was able to enter '3' space '5' and the result was 305.00. The only problem/error that I had was "Use of decimals not correct or too many numbers entered" if I entered something like '3' space space '5'.

After I changed the definition to:

RETAIL 5S 2B 13 41

I could not press the tab key, space key, or anything except numbers. Also, I had to remove the EDTWRD and the decimal was "assumed" (i.e., I couldn't key it either), though with a data type of 'Y' (in the original) the decimal is not assumed.
