Many years ago (1997, IIRC) a hotel in Rochester lost the load source drive on their system. They were on unsupported hardware and an unsupported O/S release, didn't have any support contract and hadn't done a backup in years.

So they put a sign in the lobby that said, "Our AS/400 crashed and IBM won't help us!" They made the front page of the paper, but still didn't get any help. Sometimes you have to help yourself first!

We lost our local hospital due to lack of a backup when a computer
disaster hit. I talked to a doctor on the board about that. My wife had
a temp job in a futile effort to rekey all missing data.

Building has been torn down and replaced by county library. New hospital
by large chain out of Fort Wayne on edge of town. I used to walk to the
hospital where 3 of my kids were born. Granted, new location is less than
5 miles away and is closer and more convenient to where I've moved. I
could go on but I'm getting off thread...
