I used to work for a software firm developing a package for school systems. I remember that the report card function worked pretty good - until it was ported to one of the beta school systems. It took all night to run the report card process. Turned out that the DBA had reaaaallly normalized the database - probably 5th Norm. Our test system didn't have too much data so all of the joins weren't noticed. This was an SQL Server, but I'm sure a similar result would have occurred on a System i.
Anyway, the package had no other way of accessing data except via SQL. I like having an option. Seems to me that the "other guys" are the ones coming up short, not use "legacy" farts.
