Can you point me in a direction in regards to the open source? Im looking to
validate an email address by telnet'ing to the smtp server.

The IBM Telnet command cannot. At least not directly. (I've done it by
writing custom proxy software that acted like a script.) However, there
are 3rd party tools (including open source ones) that can.
