What I am trying to do is query a list of jobs with start times. I am taking the difference between the start time of two entries to get the duration. I want to know how long each job ran, hence the time format. If a job took some number of minutes to run then I would want the duration as the number of minutes and seconds. If it took some number of hours to run I would want the duration as the number of hours, minutes, and seconds. That's what I'm referring to by time format.

I have concluded that the only way to get what I want is by using a formula of some kind as you suggested. I have to put out a production fire so this will have to wait for a little while.

If one added a number of seconds (a duration) to the time value of 00:00:00, one would have something like what you say you want. This should be all the roadmap you need.

There are several considerations, though, like the fact that anything after
23 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds will be nonsense, assuming it works at all.

Frankly, the display of durations as a time format is a curiosity, and can be confusing.

TIMESTAMPDIFF doesn't really give me what I need. It will give me the
duration but I want the result to be in time format. In my case 0
hours (hopefully), minutes, seconds. I can get the duration as one of
the three but I can't convert that to a time. At least I haven't
figured out the formula yet. I was hoping for a simpler, more
straightforward, solution. The TIME function requires a value in a
compatible format or a character constant. It won't handle a numeric
value.

When I see the answer it will probably be obvious but I have spent
over two hours trying to create a query to list records including the
difference between two time values. I searched the archives and did a
Google search but didn't see the answer. Lots of information on
differences between dates though.

How does one go about calculating the difference between two time
values in an SQL statement? Do they have to be converted to
timestamps first? I want the result to be a time value as well.
