You guys gotta remember that when it says "Install Disk #2" that you don't always have to "Remove disk #1" :-)

OK Just kidding. There are options for 6 standard size SAS drives or 8 Small Form Factor SAS (SFF SAS) drives. You pick the back-plane. Usually these days we go with the SFF drives but either is an option.

The 710 and 730 can run IBM i yes, but with their 2U form factor you can't get the stuff in there that we normally want like tape drives etc. There is no real $$ savings with these either they just save 2U of rack space.

Hope that Helps!

I looked at the hardware infocenter - the 720 described there has a max
of 6 drives - is that right? or are we talking some kind of expansion unit?

Also, are the 710 or 730 an option - they look like a pure rack-mount

Does cost kick up must by going with 300gb drives ?
About $5K to replace 8 140s with 8 282's.
I imagine an LTO4 drive is $3-4k
About that as I recall.
What's the HMC cost factor ?
For a rack mounted HMC about $6K. Then you can add a flat panel and
keyboard or use your own.
Would the scenario You and Pete described use VIOS or just OS/400 (IBM i) as the host OS ?
I think I can speak for Pete when I say we like IBM i hosting!!
VIOS has some capabilities IBM i doesn't but you wouldn't use any of
them and you would go nuts learning VIOS command line. :-)

I think the hardware list is roughly $16K for this using 140GB Drives and 32GB Memory. No tape drive included and no HMC included either.
