When a rack says "seismic zone 4" that is the US Seismic map
http://www.disastercenter.com/build/seismic.htm which has 4 zones.
It's not just the zone rate of a rack but how it is installed, wired,
connected to the floor (and ceiling), etc.
The NEBS (Network Equipment Building System) standards have "levels" that
indicate conforming to increased spec levels
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_Equipment-Building_System
The IBM planning manual mentions NEBS -GR-1089-Core but not a "seismic
rating". I don't see anything that says IBM "seismic tested" this rack (Nebs
GR 63 or Bellcore GR 63)) but it's possible & just not in brochure..

This is interesting video on seismic isolation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XddqDQVnutQ
from a testing lab - GR-63 is the physical installation & building and
GR-1089 is more electrical & cabling:
The two most common tests are GR-63-CORE, Network Equipment-Building System
Requirements: Physical Protection, and GR-1089-CORE, Electromagnetic
Compatibility and Electrical Safety -- Generic Criteria for Network
Telecommunications Equipment.
(i'm not an expert in this but have put equipment in earthquake zone 4
before (and cust chose not to come even close to a spec))

Subject: Seismic Ratings of IBM Racks
Anyone have a reference as to what specs are for a 0551 or 7014 rack in
regards to Seismic Ratings?
