Got it.

The test stored procedure couldn't put the DISPLAYVAL call directly in the SET MESSAGE_TEXT clause of the SIGNAL statement; it specifically needed a variable, so I added one, and a SET statement to call the function.

Even so, it failed, because I had left out an OPEN CURSOR statement. Then it failed because the WHICHTBL statement was returning the wrong information. But once I got it working, it's been OK.
