I don't see HMC being complex. However, I do remembering thinking it was
a piece of excrement at the beginning. Maybe, it's based on what you're
used to. I am pretty sure it's because it's gotten much better, however.
Your lan. Maybe we can help. Your bookeeper is doing one of two things.
They either have host entries registered on their PC, or, they have
registered the DNS. Check out the following:
Start, Settings, Network Connections, right click on Local Area Network,
select Properties. Scroll down to Internet Protocol, select that, and
Properties. See what they have for DNS. If you both have automatic talk
to the network person and ask "WTF?". If they have an address or two in
there then enter them into your computer. Once you enter them then do a
Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Services, right click on DNS client
and stop it. Then right click on it again and make sure that the
properties has it automatically start. Then right click on it again and
start it. The stop/start may be needed to use the new DNS entries you
entered in the Internet properties. DNS = Domain Name Service. Beats the
snot out of host table entries.
If there is no DNS at this company kick the network admin where their legs
meet - repeatedly. While you're waiting for them to heal go to the
bookeeper's PC and see if they are using host table entries.

Host table entries are undesirable because if the network admin changes an
IP address then you have to change your host table (on every client that
accesses it). While, if you use DNS, it's all automatic. We change
addresses daily on some piece of equipment or other. And we will be
moving our racks shortly, mandating an IP address change on all of our
production lpars. We're talking dozens of addresses.
