We have to send the images via XML posts to third parties and they require the Base64 encoding. But you are correct, when I do bite the dust and store our images directly in the database; I most likely will not save the converted image. My biggest concern and no one here knows how, is how to display the images in a web page without storing the image on publically accessible servers, and not allowing the user to print/save the image to their local PC/MAC for security reasons. For now we keep them on our NAS and only our mounted servers have access.
